　本作と次作『Taking a Chance on Chances』はレコード番号もサターン771と772、つまり1977年発売の1と2という連番でサン・ラのマネジメント社主アルトン・エイブラハム主宰のシカゴのサターン・レーベルから発売された作品で、サターン・レーベルは1974年からサン・ラ・アーケストラ自身が主宰するフィラデルフィア・サターンの二つに分かれており、アーケストラ発足時から運営されていたシカゴ・サターンはこの『The Soul Vibrations of Man』と『Taking a Chance～』の2作で新作のリリースを終了することになりました。この2作はどちらも1977年11月のシカゴのクラブ「ジャズ・ショウケース」でのライヴ録音とされていますがレコード・レーベルには1976年のプレスの記載があったり、『The Soul Vibrations～』はサン・ラのオリジナル曲、『Taking a Chance～』はアルバム・タイトル曲以外スタンダード曲に分けられていますが、録音年月も録音会場も本当に1977年シカゴか怪しく、アルバム・タイトル、選曲や曲名からもバンドの意を汲んだものか疑わしいものです。
　スタンダード曲集『Taking a Chance～』は音源リンクが引けませんのでデータのみご紹介しますが、この頃の、もっとサン・ラの意向のはっきりしたライヴ・アルバムと曲が重複しすぎており、公式レーベルから発売されてしまった海賊盤の趣きがあります。それは『The Soul Vibrations of Man』も同じで、オリジナルLPではA面が『The Soul Vibrations of Man Part I Volume VII』、B面が『The Soul Vibrations of Man Part II Volume VII』という、A面3パート、B面2パートからなるアルバム1枚で1曲の組曲となっていますが、実際は「Pleiades」や「The Shadow World」などいつも演っている代表曲とインプロヴィゼーションで組曲らしく編集しているにすぎません。1978年以後、サターン・レーベルの新作はバンド自身のフィラデルフィア・サターンからのリリースに一本化されるので、マネジメントがどさくさ紛れに出してしまったのが『The Soul Vibrations of Man』と『Taking a Chance on Chances』の2作と見て間違いないでしょう。アーケストラもマスターテープを提供した以上今さら特に文句はなかったと思われ、こういういい加減さはビッグ・ビジネスではないジャズの世界では普通に見られることです。アルバム・タイトルはかっこいい『The Soul Vibrations of Man』ですし、2ドラムス2パーカッションが効いた内容だって悪くはないのですが、怒涛の名作ラッシュだった'76～'78年のサン・ラの真価は他に求めるべきでしょう。なお参考までに姉妹作『Taking a Chance on Chances』のデータを載せておきます。
