本作も前回ご紹介した『Cymbals』と同時期に、大手ABCレコーズ傘下のインパルス！レーベルとの契約下で新作として録音された4枚のアルバムのうち『Cymbals』とともに未発表になり、2000年にようやくインディーのエヴィデンス・レーベルから2枚組CD『The Great Lost Sun Ra Albums (Cymbals & Crystal Spears)』として発掘リリースされたものです。4枚の録音のうち『Astro Black』(1972年5月録音)は1973年に、『Pathways to Unknown Worlds』(1973年録音)は1975年にインパルス！からリリースされましたが、その2枚に挟まれた『Cymbals』と『Crystal Spears』はインパルス！との契約期間満了からエヴィデンスで発掘リリースされるまで25年間お蔵入りにされていたことになります。『Cymbals』は2010年にイタリアのインディー・レーベルから単独LP化されましたが、本作はエヴィデンスの2枚組CDでしかリリースされておらず、LPを想定した曲順は不明ですが録音時間から1～3をA面、4はアルバム片面全面でB面、またはA/B面逆かもしれませんがそんなところでしょう。
インパルス！との契約は1972年からの3年間(リリースは1973年～1975年)で、サターン・レーベル作品の再発売を30枚＋サターン盤からのベスト・アルバム『Welcome To Saturn』＋新作というものでしたが、ベスト・アルバムと新作『Astro Black』『Pathways to Unknown Worlds』の他には、1965年の『Angels and Demons at Play』(1956年～60年録音)、1957年の『Super-Sonic Jazz』(1956年録音、『Supersonic Sounds』と改題)、1959年の『Jazz in Silhouette』(1959年録音)、1966年の『The Nubians of Plutonia』(1958年～1959年録音)、1965年の『Fate In A Pleasant Mood』(1960年録音)、1972年の『Bad and Beautiful』(1961年録音)、1966年の『The Magic City』(1965年録音)、1969年の『Atlantis』(1967年～1969年録音)の9枚のサターン・レーベル作品が新ジャケットでインパルス盤再発売されたにとどまりました。アルバムの売れ行き不調というより、親会社ABCレコーズのジャズ・リリースの方針変更によるものらしく、サン・ラ側の言い分ではインパルス！からの印税支払いは一切なかったそうですから、サン・ラ側の方で『Cymbals』と『Crystal Spears』のマスターテープを渡さなかった(共同プロデュースにインパルス！のプロデューサーが組んでいた『Astro Black』と違い、この両作はマネジメントでサターン社主のアルトン・エイブラハム単独プロデュース名義です)、そしてそのまま忘れてしまっていたのかもしれません。サン・ラは歿年まで創作力旺盛でしたから、アルバム発売が順調になった70年代以降は新作優先のリリースになっていたのでしょう。
印税未払いについてはインパルス！側にも事情があり、契約満了とともにサン・ラのインパルス！盤在庫はすべて見切品(カットアウト盤)にされて半額以下の処分品にされました。ビジネス的にはインパルス！はサン・ラ作品からまったく収益を上げなかったと主張できます。ビジネス面ではともかく、一連のリリースはインパルス！にはイメージの向上になり、サン・ラにはそれまではライヴ会場の手売りか通販、または特別な取扱店でしか入手できなかった代表的な旧作が一括して広く聴かれるアメリカ本国では初の機会になりました。
未発表の『Cymbals』と『Crystal Spears』を較べると、『Cymbals』の方が安定感のあるサウンドなのはベースのロニー・ボイキンスの参加によるものと思えます。ボイキンスは60年代アーケストラを支えた凄腕ベーシストですが、70年代に入って一旦アーケストラが再編された時にはサン・ラのムーグ・シンセサイザー導入に従ったエレキ・ベース転向を断り、メンバーの不安定になったアーケストラはテナーサックスのジョン・ギルモアがドラムス、バリトンサックスのパット・パトリックがエレキ・ベースにまわることもありました。ボイキンスのベース、クリフォード・ジャーヴィスのドラムスがアーケストラ史上最高のベースとドラムスのコンビネーションでしたが、70年代にはこの二人はファミリーではあってもレギュラーではなくなります。『Crystal Spears』が『Cymbals』の楽曲の輪郭の明瞭でボトムの太いサウンドから一転して混沌としたアンサンブルのアルバムになったのはベースレス編成によるものでしょう。サン・ラのアルバムに失敗作はありませんが、取りつきにくいアルバムの部類に入るのは確かです。集中して聴くよりサウンドの塊に委ねるようにして聴きながせば迫力のあるアルバムで、ソロイストのフィーチャリング・パートはいずれも鬼気迫る力演ですし、周期的に聴き返したくなるアルバムではあります。

せっかく70年代のインパルス！によるサターン盤のリニューアル再発売の話題が出たので、デビュー作以来'76年までのサン・ラ・アーケストラのアルバム・ディスコグラフィーを再掲載いたします。1956年～1961年秋はバンドが設立されたシカゴを拠点に活動していた時代、1961年末～1969年をニューヨーク進出時代として、1970年～1976年はモントルー・ジャズ・フェスティヴァル出演の大成功を含むヨーロッパ・ツアーでジャズのメインストリームにのし上がるヨーロッパ進出時となります。サン・ラは1977年には一旦ソロ・ピアノやカルテット、クインテット編成などのシンプルなバンド・フォーマットに揺り返りますので、大編成アーケストラの時代は76年までで一旦区切ることができる(また戻りますが)のです。
ディスコグラフィーのうち＊をつけたのが完成後に順調に発売されたアルバムで、1956年～1961年は13枚中4枚、1961年～1969年は20枚中12枚、1970年～1976年は30枚中22枚と年を追ってリリース枚数も増えてきているのがわかります。さすがに重要作は即時発売されていますが、発売の遅れたアルバムにも重要作が多いのがサン・ラの手強いところです。見やすいリストにしたつもりですので、お役立ていただければ幸いです。
