This is a sort of radio horror play written by LeRoi Jones (Imamu Amiri Baraka) and based on the Nation of Islam story of the evil angel Yaqub. Ra and the Arkestra provide incidental music. The backing is mostly spare and low-volume, so as not to drown out the players.

　イマム・アミリ・バラカ(1934-2014)はアメリカの黒人文学者・社会活動家で、マルコムX暗殺事件の衝撃からイスラム名に改名するまではリロイ・ジョーンズの出生名で活動しており、出世作である戯曲『Dutchman』1964(翻訳あり)は60年代アメリカ文学を代表する作品として知られます。ニューヨークの知識人サークルに属していたジョーンズは長編の黒人音楽社会学研究『Blues people: Negro music in white America』1963(翻訳あり)ですでに黒人音楽についての第1線の批評家と目されており、フリー・ジャズの熱心な擁護者でした。ジョン・コルトレーン急逝直前に刊行された『Black music』1967(翻訳あり)にフリー・ジャズ高揚期のジャズ批評はまとめられていますが、60年代後半には組織的な黒人文化運動に進んでいたバラカは他のジャズマンにない特殊な組織論を持つサン・ラ・アーケストラに着目し、自分の主宰する文化センターのジハッドで行われる新作戯曲『A Black Mass』(『黒ミサ』翻訳なし)の生演奏による舞台音楽を依頼します。1966年の初演ではアーケストラは20人編成で舞台音楽を担当したそうですが、1968年のジハッド文化センターでの再演ではアーケストラは通常の10人編成に戻っており、2時間かかる上演のリハーサル時の録音をコンパクトに35分のラジオ・ドラマ風にダイジェストにしたのが本作です。冒頭のデータに転載した英文が本作についてわかるほとんどすべてです。
　戯曲の内容は黒人マッド・サイエンティストが有色人種を次から次へと白人に改造しまくる、というものらしく、そういえば『Dutchman』も地下鉄で黒人乗客を片っ端から侮辱し狼藉放題する白人青年がぶっ殺されて終わる、という笑えない不条理喜劇でした。ジョーンズ/バラカのセンスはサン・ラのおおらかなユーモアやシリアスな包容力とはかけ違っているように思えますが、どうでしょうか。1967年～1968年はアーケストラはライヴに力を注いだ年で、本作はその時期の数少ない貴重な録音ですが、内容は完全にアミリ・バラカのラジオドラマLPで、これならむしろアーチー・シェップらアジテーター的若手フリー・ジャズマンを起用したほうが積極的なアプローチが聴けたのではないかと思わされます。
